Scope and Content Aerial view of Red Road Redevelopment, Glasgow The Red Road Development was commissioned in 1960 to house people from the demolished slums of Glasgow. It was designed 1960-2 by Sam Bunton & Associates, and built 1962-9. The 8.7 hectare site contains six 31-storeyed tower blocks containing 720 flats; two 27-storeyed slab blocks; and one three-storeyed block. This shows a dramatic aerial view of the slab and point blocks, with low-level housing sited below amongst grassed parkland roads, and car parking areas. The sheer size of the blocks is emphasised by the grid of windows and balconies which fill each wall. Multi-storeyed housing was seen as the answer to many of Glasgow's housing problems from the 1950s onwards. At the time of construction, these blocks were the tallest residential buildings in Europe and housed 4,700 people, the same population as a small town. This development has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
