Scope and Content Settlement at Barnhouse, Orkney This settlement is at Barnhouse, by the S shore of the Loch of Harray. Only the lowest courses of the buildings remain and the buildings appear to have been deliberately demolished. The settlement was partially rebuilt after excavation. This is a view of the remains of the houses. They were built from stone slabs and drystone walls. Each has a central hearth. There are also alcoves, dressers and drains similar to at Skara Brae. The settlement was in use at the same time as the nearby Stones of Stenness. It is possible that the people of Barnhouse built and used the stone circle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
