Scope and Content Settlement at Barnhouse, Orkney This settlement is at Barnhouse, by the S shore of the Loch of Harray. Only the lowest courses of the buildings remain and the buildings appear to have been deliberately demolished. The settlement was partially rebuilt after excavation. This is a view of one of the structures. It is one of the more elaborate houses on the site and this is thought to represent a social or a ritual hierarchy. Like similar buildings, there is a central hearth and stone furniture. The settlement was in use at the same time as the nearby Stones of Stenness. It is possible that the people of Barnhouse built and used the stone circle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
