Scope and Content Fort at Raeburnfoot, Dumfries and Galloway Raeburnfoot is a small fort on a plateau overlooking the confluence of the River Esk and Rae Burn at Eskdalemuir. It was probably a roadside station providing quarters for patrols. Excavations show one brief period of occupation, in the Antonine period. This is aerial view of the fort. It is unusual in that one side, which runs along a steep scarpment, has no man-made defences. The rest is protected by a rampart and two ditches. The fort had at least nine wooden buildings and an outer enclosure. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
