Scope and Content Photographic copies of nineteenth century photographs, mostly of Scotland. The greater part of the collection comprises images of Edinburgh and Elgin and their surrounding districts, dated to c1856. Subjects include the Old Observatory, National Monument, Nelson's Monument, Playfair Monument and Dugald Stewart's monuments on Calton Hill, Greyfriars Parish Church (showing its east end still in ruins), Lochend Loch and House, views from an elevated vantagepoint of Albany Street and its vicinity, including the Glasite Chapel, the Canongate, High School Yards, Lady Yester's Church, Moray Place, Steele's statue of the Duke of Wellington, the Royal Infirmary, and Dalhousie Castle. Subjects in Moray include Elgin Cathedral, Spynie Castle, Innes House, Woodside House, Hythe Hill, Laurelbank House, Linkwood, Forester's House, Waulkmill, Newmill, Bronville, Bishopmill, Deanshaugh House, Deanshaugh sawmill, Sheriffmill Bridge, a wooden bridge at the Haugh Dean, wooden bridge over the Lossie at the Haugh, Bishopmill Bridge, Bow Bridge and Brewery Bridge. These early images also include six views of Washington DC, including the Smithsonian Institute and the Treasury Building, of the later 1850s. The collection also includes a number of later photographs, including a J C Valentine view of the cloisters of Dryburgh Abbey, 1878, views of Elgin Station decorated in preparation for a visit by Queen Victoria, 1872, and G W Wilson views of the Garry Bridge, Perthshire, 1870s.
