Administrative History David Roberts, artist (1796-1864). Born in Edinburgh, the son of a shoemaker, Roberts worked successively as an apprentice to a house-painter and designer and painter of theatrical scenery before moving to London in 1822 when he began exhibiting easel paintings. In 1832 he began overseas tours which would take him to Spain, Morocco, the Holy Land, Lebanon, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia. His drawings from these tours were published in a series of volumes. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1838 and a Royal Academician in 1841.
