Blockhouse L M Ferguson

B 1118 CN

Description Blockhouse L M Ferguson

Date 1988

Collection Lesley M Ferguson

Catalogue Number B 1118 CN

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Broch at Clickhimin, Lerwick, Shetland This broch is built on a promontory on the Loch of Clickhimin. It would have originally stood on a rocky islet connected to the mainland by a causeway, but the water-level was lowered during the 19th century. It is a multi-period site. This is a view of the blockhouse showing the staircase which gives access to the W cell. The E cell can only be entered by a ladder from above. This has led to the suggestion that is was used as a prison cell. Finds from the site include many domestic utensils and pottery. There was also a fragment of glass from a Roman bowl. This bowl was probably made in Alexandria in Egypt around AD 100. All the finds are now in the Royal Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
