Scope and Content Aerial view of Corstorphine and Corstorphine Old Parish Church, Edinburgh The village of Corstorphine, directly to the west of Edinburgh, was originally a medieval settlement around the church and castle (now long gone). In the 19th century a 'new' village developed to the north, lining the main route from Edinburgh to Glasgow. Corstorphine Old Parish Church stands within its churchyard at the historic centre of the 'old' village, now enveloped by 20th-century housing. The new village, which grew up along St John's Road (left), was part of its initial 19th-century expansion. The old village remained close to the protection of the castle for several hundred years until the mid-19th century when the new village developed to the north. Since 1920, Corstorphine has become an ever-expanding suburb of Edinburgh. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
