Scope and Content Henge monument at Broomend of Crichie, Aberdeenshire This henge is defined by a broad ditch and surrounding bank. It has two opposing entrances which face towards the N and S. An avenue of standing stones once led through the henge to a large stone circle. The avenue was destroyed in the nineteenth century. This is an aerial view of the henge. Three standing stones can be seen in the interior. Two were part of the stone circle, while the third was erected more recently in the centre. One of only three surviving stones belonging to the avenue is also visible. This henge still survives as an earthwork on level ground to the W of the River Don. A circle of six standing stones originally stood in the interior, but only two of these remain. The interior was excavated in 1855, and several burials were found.
