Scope and Content The collection comprises at least 88 photographic prints of buildings in the older parts of St Andrews, Fife, photographed by Dr J Y MacDonald, and likely taken on behalf of the St Andrews Preservation Trust in conjunction with Dr David Jack. The photographs include buildings on Castle Street, Loudens Close, North Street, including one building in the process of being demolished; South Street; Shore Head; Market Street and St Andrews Castle. The photographs are not dated but have been catalogued as c1940.

Archive History The photographs from the survey of St Andrews were accessioned by the National Buildings Record Scottish Council, Edinburgh, in 1947. In the minutes from November 1946 it is recorded that a 'set of photographs of St. Andrews, collected by a Trustee of the St Andrews Preservation Trust, was exhibited with the suggestion that a set should be acquired for the Council's records'. In February 1947 it was suggested that the Secretary of the Council should go to St Andrews to 'examine negatives, make an appropriate selection and report at the next meeting'. Finally in December 1947 'it was reported that a selection of negatives had been lent to the Council and prints had been made for the Record. They were exhibited and the Secretary was instructed to express the Council's appreciation and thanks' (Ref. MS 68/1/2, SNBR minute book, 28 November 1946 and 14 February and 15 December 1947). It is likely that this refers to the photographs by Dr J Y MacDonald as well as a set by Dr David Jack.

Administrative History Dr James Younger MacDonald (1902-1960) was a lecturer in Chemistry at the University of St Andrews from 1927, and senior lecturer from 1952. Around 1946 he carried out a photographic survey on behalf of the St Andrews Preservation Trust of old St Andrews together with Dr David Jack. Dr MacDonald was the son of Sir George MacDonald, civil servant and archaeologist in Edinburgh who was a great authority on Roman Scotland, as well as commissioner and later chairman of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) and president of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.
