Scope and Content Aerial view of Roman site at Ward Law, Dumfries and Galloway The Roman site at Ward Law occupies the south end of a ridge running south-east from Dumfries between the Nith and the Lochar Water, giving an excellent view of the Solway area. Recognisable as a Roman camp by the typical 'playing card' shaped. Two gates are protected by 'titulae', ditches immediately outside a gateway; their diamond-shaped arrangement is most unusual. Excavations in 1939 and 1949-50 revealed a heavily cobbled road exiting the east gate. Although similar in shape to Roman temporary camps, Ward Law may have served a more permanent function.
