Scope and Content A collection of photographs by L Birley, mostly of medieval churches, but also including castles, sculpture and buildings and landscapes. Subjects include: Iona Abbey and Nunnery, Aros Bridge, Arbroath Abbey, St Vigeans Parish Church, Dryburgh Abbey, Hartfell Spa, Caerlaverock Castle, Ruthwell Parish Church, Haddington Parish Church, St Andrews Cathedral, Leuchars Parish Church, Culross Abbey, Dunfermline Abbey, Falkland Palace, Beauly Priory, Dundrennan Abbey, Elgin Cathedral, Pluscarden Priory, St John's Parish Church, Perth, Tummel Bridge, Dunkeld, Fearn Abbey, Dornoch Cathedral, and Fiag Bridge, Loch Shin. All the photographs are dated 1933 and appear to relate to an extensive tour of Scotland by Birley in that year.

Archive History No formal accession record has been identified for this collection, however, the photograph mounts bear a note that the collection was deposited [with RCAHMS] by the antiquarian Mr St John O'Gamlen (active c.1914-c.1974). The format of mount and cataloguing indicate the collection was acquired between c.1966 and c.1970.
