Scope and Content A collection of prints and film negatives of 'Scottish architectural subjects' photographed by Mrs E M Booty including the war memorial in Galashiels, Jedburgh Abbey and Dryburgh Abbey, Roxburghshire; Dunkeld Cathedral and Blair Castle, Perthshire; Ruthwell cross, Caerlaverock Castle and Sweetheart Abbey, Dumfriesshire; Arbroath Abbey and Brechin Tower, Angus; Dundrennan Abbey, Kirkcudbrightshire; Dalmeny Church, West Lothian and St Mary's Church, East Lothian. In addition it includes photographs of Ardchonnel Castle and Crinan village, Argyll; Dunure Castle and dovecot, Ayrshire; Balmoral Castle and Braemar Castle, Aberdeenshire; Pluscarden Abbey, Elgin Cathedral and Gordon Castle, Morayshire; Ballindalloch Castle, Banffshire; Stirling Castle and old bridge, Stirlingshire; Leuchars Parish Church and St Andrews Cathedral, Fife; and bridges in Inverness-shire and Cloch lighthouse, Renfrewshire. The collection is undated except for a few photographs from 1910.
Archive History The main part of the collection was originally deposited with the National Buildings Record in London before being purchased together with additional prints from Mrs E M Booty in Clydemore, Exmouth by the National Buildings Record Scottish Council in 1953. In total 228 prints and negatives were purchased by the Council (Ref. MS 68/1/2, SNBR minute book, 30 July 1953; correspondence file MS 68/3/2/18). The copyright was retained by Mrs Booty. The original reference numbers are recorded on the prints.

Additional photographs by E M Booty are held in the archive at Historic England and in the Conway Library Archive, Courtauld Institute of Art, London.
Access Conditions There are no restrictions upon access but please contact the archive in advance of a visit.
Administrative History Ethel Mary Booty (1873-1964), nee Lawson, was born in Lambeth, London. She married in India in 1897 to a judge in the Indian Civil Service before returning to England by 1911. Her address is recorded as Clydemore, Exmouth in 1953. In addition to this collection of Scottish photographs she also contributed photographs to the National Buildings Record in London of English buildings and sites, many of them focusing on church architecture, in particular Norman fonts. Photographs by her 'has appeared in SMT Magazine for years past' and other publications according to letters relating to the Scottish collection in 1953. Mrs Booty was at the time of deposit '78 years old' and 'I am now too ill to continue my beloved work'. She recalls taking many photographs while living in India and when touring the British Isles for several years after her husband retired in 1922, concluding 'I have had an adventurous life'.
