Catalogue Number 551 282
Category All Other
Scope and Content A small collection of photographic prints of prehistoric, mediaeval and early modern sculptured stones from sites in Angus, including Airlie, Cortachy and Tealing. The imagery of Tealing is of particular value as the whereabouts of these stones is now unknown.
Archive History There is no record of the accession of the photographic prints, but from their cataloguing and mounts, these would appear to have been in the possession of RCAHMS by the 1960s. A batch of three glass negatives of stones from Tealing was in the possession of the Inspectorate of Ancient Monuments in 1980. This was passed to RCAHMS c1995, and retrospectively accessioned in 2005 as Acc No 2005/92.
System of Arrangement The collection is arranged by site.
Administrative History By profession a doctor, J D Gilruth, was also an active antiquarian, specialising in the archaeology of Angus, and an artist. He wrote articles on the history of medicine, a history of Arbroath Golf Course (1909) and contributed an article, 'The Abbey of Aberbrothock: two early thirteenth-century seals' to the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (1937). Dr Gilruth died on 25 May 1939.
