Scope and Content Fort at Birrens, Dumfries and Galloway In 1895 Birrens became the first Roman fort to be excavated in Scotland. It was excavated again in 1936-7 and 1962-7. It has proved to be one of the most important Roman sites in the area. The finds are in the RMS, the Hunterian and Nithsdale Museum. This is an aerial view of the remains of the fort. Much has been eroded away but at the North end the six outer ditches can be made out. The entrance causeway cuts through these. Some of the locations of the internal structures can also be made out. The central area of the picture shows the annexe; the fort is at the bottom left of the picture. The fort, originally known as Blatobulgium, mentioned in the Antonine Itinerary. It was built over an existing fortlet around AD 120 and rebuilt in AD 142 for the 1st Cohort Nervana Germanorum. It was rebuilt again in AD 158 and abandoned in AD 184 Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
