Scope and Content Aerial view of Torthorwald Castle, Dumfries and Galloway A motte-and-bailey castle was probably erected here by the de Tothorwald family in the 12th century. This was one of the castles protecting the western marches of the de Brus lordship of Annandale. Ruins of the mid-14th-century tower stand on the motte of an earlier timber-built castle. Remains of a ditch and an earthen rampart can be seen around the base. To the left of the motte are traces of a bailey, visible as a light-coloured mark. At the invitation of David I, the Yorkshire family of de Brus received the lordship of Annandale around 1124. For the new Norman nobles, motte-and-bailey castles acted as potent symbols of feudal lordship as well being fortified residences. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
