Scope and Content Fort at Ward Law, Dumfries and Galloway This Roman temporary camp is at Ward Law, and is one of the best known examples of its kind. It was first recorded in 1772 by Pennant. It was excavated in 1939, and again in 1949-50. Part of the N rampart can still be seen. The rest of the fort can be seen as a cropmark. In this image as well as the line of the defensive ditch, three entrances can also be seen. Two of these are protected with tituli - four in one case. No finds were recovered during, though the causeway leading through the E gate was found. It was over 10 m wide and heavily cobbled. The rampart was thought to be about 5 m thick as was the rock-cut ditch which surrounds it. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
