Scope and Content Aerial view of Threave Castle, Dumfries & Galloway This aerial view, taken in 1972, shows the castle from the south-south-east on its island. To the left of the tower is its harbour, and in front of it to the right is the 15th-century artillery fortification. Note the thickness of the walls of the tower, which had accommodation on its top floor for men-at-arms to defend the wall-heads. This castle was designed as a power base. The artillery fortification was added probably in about 1450. The castle was taken by James II in 1455, after a siege, and in 1640 it resisted a siege by Covenanting forces. It was dismantled soon after, and was taken into State care in 1913. Now in the care of Historic Scotland, it is open to the public. Threave Castle is on an island in the River Dee, at one time navigable to this point. It was probably the site of a prehistoric settlement, and was chosen as the site of castle after 1369, when Archibald, 3rd Earl of Douglas, became Lord of Galloway.
