Scope and Content Roman temporary camp at Smeaton, Midlothian This temporary camp is at Smeaton, north of Dalkeith. No surface remains of this camp survive. Aerial photography has been invaluable in identifying Roman archaeology throughout Scotland. A rounded corner and a length of ditch appear as a cropmark here at Smeaton indicating the presence of a temporary camp. After a day's march, Roman soldiers would construct a defended camp. A V-shaped ditch was excavated using tools they carried. The upcast formed a low mound into which each soldier sank two wooden stakes which he carried to form a barrier.
