Oblique aerial view of fort.

SC 1734103

Description Oblique aerial view of fort.

Date 1986

Collection RCAHMS Aerial Photography

Catalogue Number SC 1734103

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of A 78563

Scope and Content Aerial view of Castle Law, Glencorse, Midlothian This fort began as a simple palisaded enclosure, then acquired a substantial timber-laced rampart, and lastly had an outer pair of ramparts and ditches added to create a multivallate hillfort. The fort is oval on plan; in this air-photograph, the relationship of the main (2nd phase) rampart to the (3rd phase) outer pair of banks and ditches, is most easily seen at lower right. The addition of the outer banks and ditches is thought to reflect increased Roman military activity in the area in AD 79 or 80. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
