Scope and Content Fort at Lyne, Scottish Borders This fort at Lyne is on a plateau above a bend in Lyne Water. It was built to replace the first century fort at Easter Happrew which was abandoned c.AD 86. The new fort was built close to a Roman road built when the area was reoccupied in the 2nd century. This is an aerial view of the site, with the fort in the top left of the image. Part of the NW corner of the fort is no longer visible. The crop marks on the N (right) side represent the annexe, which was later extended. The site has been excavated. It was built in the late Antonine period, but only seems to have been occupied for a few years. No inscriptions have been found on the site, but it probably housed a 'cohors milliaria equitata' (cavalary regiment). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
