Scope and Content Fort at Carriden, West Lothian This Roman fort is at Carriden. It is one of the easternmost forts associated with the Antonine Wall. Most of the ground once occupied by the fort is now used for farming or gardens, and no traces of the fort remain on the ground. This is an aerial view of the site, with the E side of the fort visible as cropmarks down the left side of the image. The defences consisted of a rampart and three ditches. The fort was first identified through aerial photography in 1945. Plenty of finds, such as coins and pottery, had been found in the area earlier, so the presence of the fort was expected. Some finds are now in the Royal Museum of Scotland, in Edinburgh. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
