Scope and Content Fort, Nisbet, Lanarkshire This fort lies on a low spur between the Culter Water and the northisbet Burn. Oval on plan, its defences comprise three ramparts, probably representing two phases of construction. The interior is largely occupied by a quarry pit and later enclosures. Taken from the NE during winter, this aerial view shows the fort partly enclosed by old field-banks. Snow has filled the medial ditch separating the two outer ramparts, and has been blown into all the hollows within the irregular surface of the interior. Large numbers of forts are found in the Border counties and Lanarkshire. Most were occupied in the middle centuries of the first millennium BC. Where they lie in agricultural ground, as here, they are often incorporated into the corners of the old fields. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
