Scope and Content Fort, Arbory Hill, Lanarkshire This fort, spectacularly situated on the summit of Arbory Hill, exhibits two phases of construction. The later is represented by a circular, thick-walled enclosure, which stands within the area enclosed by the earlier multi-vallate defences. This aerial view in winter from the east, clearly shows the walled enclosure within the earlier fort, the defences of which are picked out by the snow that has drifted into its ditches. Part of an outwork to the defences can be seen in the foreground. Numerous forts are found throughout the Border counties and into Lanarkshire. Most were occupied in the middle centuries of the first millennium BC. Some, as here but not visible on this photograph, contain traces of the stances of timber round-houses.
