Scope and Content Fort, fortlet and settlement at Croy Hill, North Lanarkshire This Roman fort, fortlet and civilian settlement are on Croy Hill. They are built on a plateau, 300m NE from the summit, and over looking the Kelvin valley. The fortlet is 80 m SW of the fort and the settlement is to the S. This is an aerial view of the site. It shows the Antonine Wall and part of the fortlet SW of the fort can also be seen. They appear as darker lines against the snow. The fortlet was built the same time as the Wall and was later replaced by the fort. Excavations in the 19th century uncovered the location of the fort's headquarters building. Also found were inscribed stones showing that a detachment from the Sixth Legion occupied the area for a while. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
