Scope and Content Fort at Westerwood, North Lanarkshire This Roman fort is at Westerwood. It was built on an N-facing slope above the River Kelvin. The fort was one of the stations along the Antonine Wall, which abuts the N side of the fort itself. This is an aerial view of the fort. Nothing of the fort remains at ground level, though in this view part of the S and W sides of it can be seen - to the right of the modern buildings, a curved shadow in the snow follows the line of the old ditches. The fort was first excavated in 1932 by Sir George Macdonald. It established the layout of the fort, and Macdonald also tentatively identified the Military Way and an annexe to the S of the fort. Further work done in 1974-5 found no traces of these. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
