Scope and Content Fort and temporary camp at Balmuildy, East Dunbartonshire This Roman fort is at Balmuildy. It was built where the Military Way crossed over the River Kelvin. The fort was probably built in advance of the Antonine Wall, which runs in front of N rampart. There is a temporary camp on higher ground NE of the fort. This is an aerial view of the site showing the camp. Nothing remains on the ground, but three sides and two corners can be seen here as cropmarks in the middle of the image. The camp faced SW, and gates are visible in the sides. A number of inscribed and sculptured stones have been found in or near the fort. Two state that the fort was built by the Second Legion Augusta, under the command of Quintus Lollius Urbicus. These are now in the Hunterian Museum, University of Glasgow.
