Scope and Content Caisteal an Duin Bhain from east, Muck, Small Isles, Highland The island of Muck is one of the Small Isles, along with Canna, Eigg and Rum. Its name translates as 'Swynes Ile', or 'Pig isle', possibly due to its shape. This fertile island has a population of only 30 people, who mostly live around the harbour of Port Mor. Muck has been owned by the same family, the MacEwens, for over 100 years. This shows the Iron Age hill fort of Caisteal An Duin Bhain occupying a natural rock stack on the south side of the island. Parts of a defensive wall still survive and the interior holds the remains of later rectangular house surrounded by lazy bed cultivation (farming using narrow strips of enriched earth, often used in areas of poor soil). The name Caisteal An Duin Bhain means 'Castle of the White Fort'. It is unlikely that the fort would have been inhabited permanently, and was probably only used to defend a community in times of attack by raiders from the sea. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
