Scope and Content Sorisdale, Coll, Argyll and Bute The village of Sorisdale is located on the north-east coast of Coll. In 1841, Coll was recorded as having a population of over 1400. A period of depopulation followed with the Maclean and later the Stewart landlords encouraging families to emigrate. Several families found refuge at Sorisdale in 1861 having been granted sanctuary by the Campbell family who owned the eastern end of Coll. This view shows the settlement at Sorisdale (centre) and part of the sandy beach (top left). The ruins of the 19th century village are clearly visible. Some of the earlier houses remain in use as stores and one (centre right) is currently occupied. A new house has also been built (centre left). John Lorne Stewart bought the island in 1856 from the Maclean Chieftain of Coll. Following a period of depopulation in the mid-19th century, the Stewarts repopulated the island with Ayrshire dairy farmers and for a time Coll was well-known for its cheese.
