Scope and Content Settlement remains and field enclosures at Skipisdale, Mingulay, Western Isles The island of Mingulay, meaning 'Big Isle' in Old Norse, lies at the southern end of the Western Isles. In 1881, 150 people lived on the island but in 1912 it was abandoned. Skipisdale is located on the south coast of the island. Mingulay has been owned by the National Trust for Scotland since 2000. This shows the ruins of a settlement (centre) of prehistoric and later date located next to a burn. There are at least two stone-walled, prehistoric roundhouses with over 10 medieval or later buildings on top. Three unroofed structures are depicted on the 1st edition of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map of 1880. Skipisdale takes its name from a combination of the Old Norse words for 'ship' and 'valley'. The reference to ship indicates that there was a landing place at the coast. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
