Scope and Content Motte-and-bailey castle at Lumphanan, Aberdeenshire Known as the Peel Bog of Lumphanan, this motte-and-bailey castle is one of the oldest in the Grampian area. It appears to have been established during the 13th century by the de Lundins or Durward family, who were hereditary ushers to the Scottish crown. Enclosed by a circular turf rampart, the earthen motte which is probably partly natural, stands at some 9m high. In 1487 Thomas Charteris built a manor house on the abandoned motte. This building was ruinous by the 18th century. Local legend suggests this was the place of death of Macbeth, having fled from defeat at Dunsinane. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
