Scope and Content Suisnish Pier and Ore processing buildings, Raasay, Highland The island of Raasay lies to the north-east of Skye in the Inner Hebrides. The iron ore mine on Raasay was opened by William Baird and Company in 1912 who built a railway to carry mined ore to the coast and a pier for loading ships to transport the ore to their works on the mainland. This aerial view shows Suisnish Pier, built c.1914. Directly behind the pier is the hopper and above this 5 kiln bases. Running from the hopper (top centre) are a series of gantry bases that supported the ore conveyor on its journey from the crusher to the hopper. The ruins of workshops and offices lie to the left of the hopper and a reservoir can also be seen (top left) During World War I German prisoners of war worked in the mine in contravention of the Hague Convention which banned their employment in the munitions industry. Almost 200,000 tonnes of ore were produced during the war years but production ceased in 1919, shortly after the war ended. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
