Scope and Content Aerial view of Glamis Castle, Angus This shows the castle in the centre with the 'Dutch' garden immediately in front and the large rectangular Italian garden, with borders and hedges arranged in geometric shapes, on the right. A Long Walk bordered by yew hedges connects these gardens. The main tree-lined drive to the house is visible on the left corner. Claude Bowes-Lyon, the 13th earl, commissioned Arthur Castings (d.1913) to design the 'Dutch' garden in 1892. The reason why it is called the 'Dutch' garden is not known. The 14th earl's wife was responsible for the creation of the Long Walk, and the Italian garden (originally known as the 'Autumn Garden') between 1907 and 1910. The two small towers (centre left and centre bottom) probably date from the 19th century. Glamis Castle was built c.1427 as a tower-house and is the hereditary seat of the Earl of Strathmore. The castle has had many additions since 1435, and was remodelled between 1606 and 1626 before finally being modernised in the late 20th century by the architect James Dunbar-Nasmith. Patrick Lyon, 3rd Earl of Kinghorne, was responsible for major renovations between 1669 and 1690, which included raising the tower and building the west wing and north-east corner wing containing the chapel. Other major works have included the demolishing of the west wing in 1774 and its rebuilding between 1790 and 1800, as well as the east wing's rebuilding in 1891.
