Scope and Content Aerial view of railway viaduct at Friockheim, Angus Friockheim Railway Viaduct was built around 1840 for the Arbroath and Forfar Railway line between Arbroath and Montrose. This route was superseded in the 1880s by the northorth British Railway's direct coastal line. The viaduct was disused by 1914. This aerial view shows the viaduct passing over the Lunan Water and its tributaries on the outskirts of the village. Built of red sandstone, the viaduct has a battlemented parapet. It measures 189m in length and is 8.46m wide. The viaduct has eight (originally nine) elliptical ribbed arches, each arch having a span of 18.29m. At the southern end (top), two arches are infilled after modifications associated with a later girder bridge. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
