Scope and Content Aerial view of Port Ellen, Islay Port Ellen was one of several planned villages established on Islay during the early 19th century as a herring fishery. Founded in 1821 by Walter Frederick Campbell, it was originally named Port Ellinor in honour of his wife. Fishing returns were initially disappointing, and not until the 1840s did the village become Islay's largest single community with a population of about 1,000. The population remained around this figure for the rest of the 19th century. The architecture in the village consisted of two-storeyed, three-bay harled terraced houses. A high proportion of the original houses still survive relatively unaltered, including the single-storey cottages in Fisher Row, on the east side of the bay. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
