Date 1977

Collection RCAHMS Aerial Photography

Catalogue Number SC 1683096

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of AG 8537

Scope and Content Aerial view of Finlaggan Castle, Islay, Argyll and Bute Loch Finlaggan lies c.1.5km north-west of Ballygrant on Islay. The remains of a castle and associated buildings occupy two small islands at the north-east end of the loch: Eilean Mór, meaning 'great isle'; and Eilean na Comhairle, meaning 'council isle'. This aerial view shows Eilean na Comhairle (lower left) and Eilean Mór (centre). Most of the late medieval buildings on the islands are reduced to the lowest courses of their walls, but there are two relatively well-preserved structures on Eilean Mór. The structure to the left probably formed a service range to the castle, while the structure on the right was a chapel. Above the chapel can be seen traces of agricultural cultivation in the form of rig-and-furrow. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
