Scope and Content Aerial view of Inveraray, Argyll and Bute Archibald, 3rd Duke of Argyll, who inherited the title in 1743, initiated the removal of the town of Inveraray to a new site 0.6km to the south. The first proposal was drawn up in 1744 by the duke and Lord Milton (1692-1766). The 3rd Duke and Lord Milton wanted the main axis of the site to be north-south, parallel to the beech avenue (right). There were 'zones' in their plan - industry and commerce were to be grouped in 'Cowall Street', separated from housing. Although there were no examples of planned towns in Scotland at that time, Archibald had seen building plans on a larger scale in London and Bath. With his designs for Inveraray and Campbeltown, he became the father of the planned town in Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
