Scope and Content Aerial view of Seton House and Chapel, East Lothian Seton House and Chapel lie c.2km north-east of Tranent. The house was designed by Robert Adam in 1789 and built in 1790 on the site of the late 16th-century Seton Palace for Alexander Mackenzie. The estate passed to the Earl of Wemyss in the 18th century. This aerial view shows Seton House in the centre with Seton Chapel above. The house is a castellated three-storeyed block, with a variety of towers. Two two-storeyed U-plan service pavilions adjoin the house to the right, forming a courtyard. In 1492 Lord Seton endowed the 13th-century chapel to form a collegiate church, with priests whose duty was to say masses for the founder. The chapel was altered and added to during the 15th and 16th centuries, and is now in the care of Historic Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
