Scope and Content Aerial view of Gosford House, Coach-house, Stables and Gardens, East Lothian Gosford House lies c.2.5km north-east of Longniddry overlooking the River Forth. Designed by Robert Adam for the Earl of Wemyss and March, in 1790, it was not completed until 1810. Further alterations and additions were made by William Young in 1891. This aerial view shows the west elevation of the house. At the top of the photograph are the stables and coach-house. As part of his alterations, Young moved the main entrance to the house from the east (top) to the south (right) elevation. In use briefly as a hotel during the 1930s, a fire in 1940 caused much damage to the central block with the dome, and the north pavilion (left), which is still roofless. Only the south pavilion is lived in now. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
