Scope and Content Aerial view of Cramond Village and Cramond Island, Edinburgh Cramond lies at the mouth of the River Almond on the shores of the Firth of Forth. It developed as an 18th-century industrial village, but its origins date from the 2nd century AD when it was a Roman harbour station supplying the Antonine Wall. The 18th-century village lies in the angle created by the River Almond and the Firth of Forth, at the northern edge of its suburban hinterland. Cramond Island lies a short distance offshore, accessible by a causeway at low water. The name Cramond is derived from Caer Amon, which means 'the fort on the Almond', the name given to one of the Roman 'anchor' stations supplying the Antonine Wall which ran across Scotland from the Firth of Forth to the River Clyde.
