Scope and Content Aerial view over the castle to the New Town of Edinburgh Edinburgh's Georgian northew Town, built towards the end of the 18th century at a time of rapid development in Scotland, was laid out on land stretching down towards the Firth of Forth on the north side of the castle and Old Town high on its ridge. The New Town, planned by James Craig in 1767, is built on a simple grid plan. Further north are the crescents and terraces of the northern New Town, a later development by Robert Reid and William Sibbald in 1801-2 which links with Moray Place to the west. The New Town was built, like all other contemporary buildings, with the aid of horses and carts for local transport, and sailing ships to bring timber from the Baltic and slates from the Highlands. The principal material, stone, was from local quarries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
