Scope and Content Aerial view of the New Town, Edinburgh Edinburgh's New Town, designed by the young architect, James Craig, in 1767, is based on a simple plan - three parallel streets with a square at each end - which made ideal use of the site, with its main axis, George Street, lying along a natural ridge. Single-sided terraces, Princes Street (left) and Queen Street (right), face south and north respectively. Between them, the grand central avenue, George Street, links the two great squares: St Andrew in the east (foreground) and Charlotte in the west. The northern New Town, the second major development of Georgian Edinburgh, planned in 1801-2, lies beyond the wooded gardens of Queen Street to the north, with the Moray estate development forming a link with later expansion of the city to the west.
