Scope and Content Aerial view of St Andrew Square, Edinburgh St Andrew Square, the square at the eastern end of James Craig's gridiron plan for the New Town, became, by the late 18th century, one of the most popular and fashionable places in which to live. St Andrew Square, unlike Charlotte Square, is not a unified design by one architect. The former house of Sir Lawrence Dundas (right), in a site designed for St Andrew's Church, looks across the central gardens along the length of George Street (left). St Andrew Square, named after the patron saint of Scotland, St Andrew, originally had its corresponding square at the western end of the New Town named after St George, the patron saint of England.
