Scope and Content Aerial view of Heart of Midlothian Football Club, Tynecastle Park Stadium, Gorgie Road, Edinburgh The Gorgie district of Edinburgh is home to Heart of Midlothian (Hearts) Football Club's Tynecastle Park Stadium. The club was founded in 1874 and took its name from a popular dance club in the city's Royal Mile. It is also the name of the Edinburgh's former tolbooth or prison. The club moved to Gorgie in 1881. This shows the crowded urban setting of Tynecastle Park Stadium. The ground is surrounded by congested roads, tenements, a school, a children's nursery and bonded warehouses. Space for parking is very limited. Since 1991 the stadium has been renovated and altered almost beyond recognition. On 15 April 1989, 96 Liverpool football fans died at Hillsborough, Sheffield, highlighting the need for a radical review of safety standards for supporters at football grounds throughout Britain. Like other major football clubs, Hearts responded by investing large sums to turn Tynecastle into an all-seater stadium. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
