Scope and Content Oblique aerial view of the Dumbiedykes and St Leonards areas, Edinburgh The slab blocks on Holyrood Road were approved for construction in 1958. The two, eleven-storeyed blocks contain 182 flats in total, and were built for the Housing Committee of Edinburgh Corporation by Crudens. They are surrounded by medium-rise blocks. This photograph shows the curve of the road through Holyrood Park, as it snakes around Arthur's Seat. The large slab blocks have projecting end 'wings'. The medium-rise housing forms courtyards and squares which give a sense of privacy. These early high rise blocks next to Arthur's Seat benefit from a stunning location. The projecting wings, angled flat roofs and the use of different colours of cladding on these flats adds interest to their design. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
