Scope and Content Dunrobin Castle and gardens, Sutherland, Highland Dunrobin Castle is located on the east coast of Sutherland, north of the village of Golspie. It is a private residence owned by the Countess of Sutherland and the traditional seat of the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland. The Earldom of Sutherland was created in 1235 and the castle is first mentioned in 1401. This view from the south-east shows the castle and the formal (centre) and kitchen (centre left) gardens. To the right of the formal gardens, amongst the trees, the roof of Dunrobin Castle museum can be seen. This was originally built as a garden pavilion or summerhouse in 1723. Between 1835-1850, Sir Charles Barry (1795-1860), the architect of the House of Commons, was employed to remodel the castle in the Scottish Baronial style. Barry also designed the formal gardens. Following a fire in 1915 that destroyed much of Barry's original interior design, Sir Robert Lorimer (1864-1929) was employed to redesign the interior and make some external alterations.
