Scope and Content Aerial view of Nairn, Highland Nairn was founded as a royal burgh c.1200 by William the Lion. The 19th century saw a growth in large villas as the town's reputation for healthy air and bracing bathing spread, and the railway reached the town. Golf was also an attraction from the 1890s. This aerial view shows the layout of the town centre. Nairn still displays many of the characteristics typical of a Scottish burgh of linear layout. It has a long wide High Street, with numerous closes stretching out behind the main street façades. In the centre of the photograph is the Court House. Built in 1817-8, it is a two-storeyed building with a battlemented central tower. On top of the tower is a lead-spired bellcote with four clock-faces which was built in 1868-70 by A & W Reid.
