Scope and Content Aerial view of Ardnamurchan Lighthouse and Keepers' Houses, Highland Lying c.8km north-west of Kilchoan on the Ardnamurchan peninsula, Ardnamurchan Lighthouse is at the most westerly point on mainland Britain. Designed by Alan Stevenson and built 1846-8 by Robert Hume, its light was first displayed in 1849. This aerial view shows the seven-storeyed circular tower alongside the single-storeyed keepers' cottages, built to Stevenson's designs in 1848. To the right is a former steading which contained a barn, byre and workshop for each keeper. Ardnamurchan was one of the last lighthouses to be built in the 19th century by the Commissioners of the Northern Lighthouse Board. Its original fixed light was changed to a flashing signal 1927-8. The original lens mechanism is still in the light-room. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
