Scope and Content Aerial view of Beauly Priory, Beauly, Highland Created a burgh of regality in 1704, Beauly lies c.12km west of Inverness on the River Beauly. Built around a medieval priory, the town was developed c.1805 as a planned settlement by the local landowners, the Frasers of Lovat. This aerial view shows The Square in the centre, with the medieval priory at bottom left. The priory was founded c.1230 by Sir John Bisset. It is a cruciform plan, consisting of a long narrow nave with flanking north and south transepts. There have been numerous additions and alterations to the priory between the 14th and 16th centuries. After the Reformation (1560) and dissolution of the monasteries, it became 'badly decayed' by 1633. It is now in the care of Historic Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
