Scope and Content Keiss harbour, Caithness, Highland This view shows the harbour area at Keiss (foreground). The harbour was built of local flagstone in 1831. A large, three storeyed storehouse of the same date is located alongside the harbour. To the right of this is a small vaulted ice-house with a gabled entrance. There is a World War II pillbox above the harbour and, across the road, are a number of traditional fishermen's houses. Keiss is located on Sinclair's Bay in north-east Caithness, between Wick and John O'Groats. It is a small farming and fishing village with a long association with the Sinclair Earls of Caithness who first built a castle at Keiss in the late 16th-early 17th century. The first Baptist church in Scotland was founded at Keiss in 1638 by the proprietor, George Sinclair, 5th Earl of Caithness. The present Baptist church at Keiss (not in view) dates to 1750.
